Here’s an email from a Keys correspondent I met during the county commission race last year, responding to yesterday’s missive, “Homeless Laws, Ethics and Economics,” and below that is my reply.

Excellent! You are so brilliant when you speak in a language that reflects the reality we all share. When you speak in terms of God speaking to you in dreams, you just scare everyone, and you lose your audience.

How odd. Every morning, what I write is the result of dreams the night before shaping me into writing it. I don’t always say that in what I write, but it’s that way nonetheless. If you could see some of the stuff I sometimes write the day before, and see how it either gets thrown out the window altogether by my dream maker, or is so changed during sleep time that it is hardly unrecognizable from what I started out to write, it might cause you to wonder if the real Sloan Bashinsky is even showing up most days. Ironically, I seem to fall into agreement with what ends up being written, so perhaps a part of me does show up, but the rest of me seems just to be along for the ride, and often I feel as if I’m “The Great Pretender.”
I’m feeling like that in other ways, too. I don’t talk about it publicly, but I’ve had an illness most of my adult life. Sometimes it’s not too bad, but other times it is debilitating. It probably is the main reason I have dreaded holding a public office, as I can’t imagine me putting in the sixty to eighty hours a week being in public office will require. I’ve been having that argument with heaven since I re-entered the county commission race last year, after dreams told me to pull out, and then a few weeks later dreams told me to get back into it. Running for office, tossing out ideas, is one thing; sitting in office is something entirely different. Right now, I’m not in the least at peace with the latter prospect, although I mostly am enjoying the campaign. This time, it seems, I’m being cut loose, allowed to let it all hang out, even stuff it doesn’t even occur to me to let hang out until I dream about it and wake up in agreement with it.
It may be me not seeing clearly, but I don’t sense that much of what I’m saying and writing seems to be going in generally. I don’t even see people who have been close to me for a few years, who have urged me to be involved politically because of the very thing you say scares so many people off, sticking close now, embracing what’s coming out of my pen and mouth, whether I say it came from dreams or God, or not. They seem to be holding back, maybe because they don’t want the exposure, maybe because they no longer feel the same way about me that they once did. Whatever their reasons for laying low, it doesn’t encourage me to keep it going politically.
Lastly, while I truly love Key West and the Keys, there are matters of the heart and soul that are far more important to me, which are not being addressed at this time and which I’d much rather be doing something about. Until now, those opportunities have not been open to me, but the past few nights’ dreams leave me wondering if maybe that’s not about to change. I should know pretty soon.
Maybe after taking your identity out of this email exchange, I will use it as today’s general email and post it to Today’s Cock-a-doodle-doo at goodmorningkeywest. com. I’ve been telling heaven for two weeks that the public has a right to know where I stand on these topics. This, too, seemed to come to a head in dreams last night.
P.S. An email exhange with a different woman, regarding yesterday’s Homeless Law, Ethics and Economic’s posting.

I believe it is a matter of personal economics. When people are working hard and don’t have time to enjoy life they tend to resent those who are enjoying life with no responsibilities and no consequences. Sure there are those homeless who work just as hard or harder but it is the ones kicked back throwing back a few cold ones and hanging out all day at the beach who really piss people off. So sending a cop in to babysit may keep them in line but it will not do much for the resentment - nothing will. I am glad you have a solution that is certainly doable.
