Key West First

key-west-first.jpgBelow is the text of an email sent this morning to Mayor Morgan McPherson and former Mayor Jimmy Weekley.

Dear Morgan and Jimmy,

Just below is an email reply I received to yesterday morning’s “Open Letter to Jimmy Weekley.” Bill was one of the five candidates in the 2003 mayoral, during which I was told in dreams to do all I could to try to get you, Jimmy, re-elected, which I did. You won without a run-off.

“Sloan. It’s too bad you didn’t include the fact that Jimmy Weekley opposed the illegal transient rentals in Truman Annex and refused to settle a lawsuit that the City had already won. Or that Morgan’s first meeting was an executive that didn’t include the public. The only person allowed to speak at this meeting was the lawyer suing the City for these illegal out of state renters. The Lawyer representing citizens of Key West that lived in Truman Annex and were against the lawsuit was not allowed to attend. After the meeting, at the regular Commission meeting the first thing Morgan said was that the matter was settled and the City would settle. Every citizen that came to the Coomission meeting, and their lawyer, had their rights torn away that day by Morgan McPherson. If this is your idea of moving forward then maybe you move to a city more to Morgan’s liking, like West Palm Beach. Oh, wait a minute, if Morgan is re-elected Key West will soon be indistinquishable from West Palm Beach. Bill Estes”

Imagine the irony I felt reading Bill’s remarks. Irony, because I’ve been posting emails and speaking about Truman Annex at candidate forums and during media interviews, and I’ve not been able to find anything good to say about it. Irony, because while Bill lays a great deal of blame on you, Morgan, it was during Jimmy’s watch that Truman Annex came into being. Irony, because I’ve been writing and saying that developers and their political cronies are trying to turn Key West and the Keys into another West Palm Beach. Irony, because I’m the only candidate for office, now or in the recent past, who has publicly and continuously opposed any further new private development in Key West and the Keys. If anyone disbelieves this, they can get their disbelief resolved by speaking with the five Monroe County Commissioners, and with Wayne Markam, Tom Tuell and Steve Estes, of the Keynoter, Key West Citizen and News-Barometer respectively. Or they can just speak with you two, right?

Sincerely,

Sloan Bashinsky
