An Open Letter to Jimmy Weekley

jimmy-weekley.jpgDear Jimmy,

I congratulate you for coming up with the “Key West First” campaign slogan. I’m jealous, wish I had come up with it myself, because God only knows how often I have made suggestions and taken stands during this campaign that are not popular but are what I truly feel are in Key West‘s best interests.

Like, of the six mayor candidates, I’m the only candidate who opposes the City of Key West giving four acres of Truman Waterfront land to a developer to build a retirement community sponsored by Florida Keys Assisted Living Coalition, because there is nothing in it for the City of Key West. Of the eight city commission candidates, only George Maurer opposes this city give-away. You said on Richard Grusin’s radio show two Sunday’s ago that you have pushed for this retirement community from the time three older women came to you with the original idea.

Like, of the six mayor and eight city commission candidates, I’m the only candidate who has said Ed Swift, who came up with the idea for him to have an exclusive tour company in Key West, and the city commissioners and mayor who went along with it, should voluntarily reimburse the City of Key West out of their own pockets any and all money the City ends up spending on the Duck Tours case, including damages, interests, court costs, court reporter and attorney fees.

Like, you, Jimmy, sat on the City Commission that gave Ed Swift the exclusive license to run a touring company in Key West.

Like, you, Jimmy, sat on the City Commission that later gave the City Attorney the go-ahead to “keep grinding Duck Tours into the dust.”

Like, Ed Swift is on the Board of Directors of Florida Keys Assisted Living Coalition.

Like, I see nothing indicating that you, Jimmy, are not still in league with Ed Swift, who is not a registered city voter because he lives in an up-scale community outside Key West where he made his fortune and perhaps put it into bankruptcy.

Like, I said on Richard Grusin’s show that I would appeal to people’s conscience, to try to get them to do the right thing; and if that didn’t work, I’d shame them. Put Key West first, Jimmy. Or pull out of the race.

Sincerely,

Sloan Bashinsky
