Good afternoon, Sloan!

I have to say that I can't agree with one of Steve's statements, namely, that Florida Keys residents should be the only ones who have a say in who is hired as superintendent. I'm pretty certain that has been the cause of the current woes.

I DO agree that nobody as superintendent is going to fix the problems plaguing MCSD unless they are willing and able to flush the toilet that is the nepotic administration system and start anew with fresh faces.

On another note, I thought I should report yet another incident involving KWHS Administration Gone Wild. I seriously expect to see that video advertised during one of my infrequent bouts of insomnia. I will order it if I see the ad. Anyway, our mutual teacher friend witnessed, right after the holiday break, Chris Valdez, unesteemed Assistant Principle, and Officer Bulne aka Officer Bull, KWHS apparent full-time police officer, presumably under the rather thin guise of school security, had confiscated a tazer from a student and were rambunctiously chasing each other around the office with it, the little scamps. I know, I know...boys will be boys.

From my understanding of it, there was no questioning of the student as to why he felt the need to carry a tazer to school, nor any counseling provided on the assumption that he was being bullied, as is sometimes the case (I have no knowledge or proof as to what the situation is, so the bullied theory is pure conjecture on my part), but it seems rather incompetent for either of them to even ask, and unbelievably unprofessional of them for their subsequent actions.

In summary, I have to agree that a state takeover of the school system is in order.

[...] God – the Catch 22 of all Catch 22s Allan replied: Thanks for the note, Sloan. I know how hard you have worked to make things better in the Keys. All the best, Alan Ran into John Hammerstrom of Key Largo yesterday at Good Food Conspiracy on Big Pine Key. John said the usual suspects are trying to get a law passed in Tallahassee that will lengthen the time the State of Florida requires the Florida Keys to be allowed to evacuate for a hurricane. The point, of course, if that happens, more development can be allowed in the Keys than is now allowed under the current 24-hour mandatory evacuation requirement, which itself is a joke, because there is no way the Keys can be evacuated in 24 hours, even if there is not a wreck at, say, Kemps Channel Bridge, which, as happened last week, stacked up traffic 5 miles both ways on US 1. I know, because I was caught in the northbound stack up, about a mile below Sugarloaf School. It took them about 2 1/2 hours to get traffic moving after a jeep passing traffic head-on’d a van coming the other way, carrying 11 people. Everyone in the Keys, who isn’t sound asleep, knows the hurricane evacuation schedule has zero to do with saving lives, and everything to do with how much new development is allowed in the Keys. John said, what it boils down to is, which takes precedence, private property right protected by the US Constitution, or people’s right to life and safety, also protected by the US Constitution. Of course, we both know the answer in the Keys is private property rights take precedence, and always have. But how would a court of law come down on that? John said, when he spoke with Chief Assistant County Attorney Bob Shillinger about it, Bob said there does not seem be any case directly in point. I told John, I was pretty sure, historically the courts have subordinated private property rights to human safety. But and again, this is the Florida Keys, and we all know, who are not sound asleep, that private property rights are more important than anything in the Keys. Don’t take my word for it, though – ask Mother Nature. Ask No Name Key, where Brad Vickery is said to be saying “We are going to turn it into the Hamptoms.” I don’t have to go to India, or even to the edge of the Everglades, to know what is wrong with this picture. All I have to do is go down to Key West and drive around. All I have to do is drive around any Key where there are paved roads. Development is the Keys’ jesus, has been ever since the new and bigger waterline was built down from the mainland with the new and wider bridges and roads. Sloan Bashinsky keysmyhome@hotmail.com Filed under: Today's FlaKey Drivel — Sloan @ 4:29 am Comments (0) [...]

I am floored that the Police Chief is so politically un-savvy as to publicly state in an interview that he has no intention of enforcing the open-container law. I honestly don't understand why every lawyer fresh out of law school isn't getting down to Key West to cut their prosecuting teeth on these officials. They make it so easy! Let me tell you that I grew up in a town where corruption is a way of life, and has been for years, and where nobody can prosecute the corrupt officials because they know how to speak publicly AND NOT TELL THEIR BUSINESS. Rookie lawyers would have a field day with this town, and veteran ones would wind up owning it!

On the other hand, I had a similar issue in Orlando, where the police told me they wouldn't enforce a law because too many people were breaking it, so I'm wondering if there is simply some sort of inherent laziness in Florida law enforcement that makes this sound like a valid excuse.

Sloan,

I have an amazing idea that will allow Monroe County to stop getting interference from the state and Federal levels: are you ready?

Go ahead, get comfortable.

Ok, here it is:

Start doing things the right way. If they do things the right way (ie, according to state and Federal rules, laws, and guidelines), they won't be interfered with by the state or the Federal.

It seems there is more of an effort to protect the identites of the kids who bullied the "gay" boy than to protect the gay boy. Is the bullying of the gay boy being done by a group of Bubba kids....

Do bullies grow up to be Bubbas ...I know I am being bullied in the City of Key West, and they are all grown up Bubbas who are doing it.

When I asked Mark Willis what the then Sheriff Rick Roth was going to do about a situation of some deputy bullying kids, Mark Willis embarrassingly told me that Sheriff Roth had replied he was going to do what they always did,...Ignore it. When I asked Mayor Cates recently what he was going to do about a handful of City officials misconduct of "bullying", he said for me to "Sue the city" if I wanted it stopped. Obviously, as you said Sloan, nothing will be done if they can get away with doing nothing. Ignoring unfair situations and bullying is what Bubbas do....and we non-Bubbas will get Bubba-whooped on if we try to change it...really whooped on, for real.

"...why the gay community has not gone to war over this, and why The Citizen has not aired this out, is this is the high season and Key West already did not get named as a gay-friendly city in America by a mainland publication, and news of this deplorable gay-bashing situation at Key West High School getting spread around might cause gays to boycott Key West, in protest of the City, its only daily newspaper, and its school district not dealing with gay-bashing."

OK... so here's what I'm going to do. If our school officials are more concerned about bad publicity than dealing effectively with this matter then, unless they step-up to the plate, I'll personally call the Advocate, tell them they were correct, and offer-up this senario as a real-time example why.

Deal with it now on your terms, or deal with it later on someone else's terms; those are your choices.
